Tanto -- Saratoga

Accidently stumbled across this tiny little restaurant in Saratoga one night, while looking for a Ramen House. It reminded me a lot of Musha (see previous post) but didn't quite hit the spot like the heaven-in-Torrance did.

Cuisine: Japanese Tapas
Cost: $7-$14 per plate
Location: 1306 Saratoga Ave, San Jose

I'll just make a quick post about this place because there really wasn't much that was spectacular, outside of their Plum Wine. I tend to like bold flavors, and enjoy eating foods that are prepared in an out-of-the-norm way. Tanto wasn't like this. Most of their flavors were mild at best. I never, ever use Soy Sauce when I dine out but I found myself itching for it several times at this restaurant. But if that's your thing, then Tanto might be for you.

Several Yelp reviews loved their Ramen with clams, which was good if you like clams. Personally I like to have that rich pork and seaweed flavor in my ramen, so I didn't like this one too much. Their pork belly was also a huge letdown after experiencing Musha's, so stay away from this one. Their Agedashi Tofu was interesting, to say the least. It was incredibly light, airy and white in color. Unlike most restaurants, Tanto made this popular dish with firm tofu rather than soft - and I can't say I agree with its choice.

I did enjoy the Fried Pork though because their ponzu sauce was perfect. That and I guess anything fried is a plus. They were unfortunately out of the Fried Duck that night, which sounds very intriguing. Leave a comment if you've tried it!

I noticed a new Japanese Tapa place on El Camino, near Chocolate Sushi, the other day. I'll have to hit it up and let you know if that dinner goes any better.
