To no surprise to my friends (or to any of you, really), my first stop in New York was a STEAKHOUSE! After a five-hour flight delay, I had to arrive at my Peter Luger reservations with bags and luggage in hand. I thought it was going to be a very nice, stuffy kind of place (since it is so well known) but it was pretty casual (at least for lunch - I was wearing Rainbows) and they were happy to watch after my bag. Anyway, let me just say that if all I could go back to the restaurant every day of my life, I would die so, so happy.

THE STEAK IS AMAZING. THE BEST I HAVE EVER HAD, AND EVER WILL HAVE, probably.
Of course we got the bacon, which I thought was just okay, especially after the steak was served. We also got an order of the onion rings, which were more like onion strings - which I love! After almost ordering the burger (which I have heard good things about), Jon and I split the Steak for 2 and it was the most amazing thing ever.
I LOVE when I dine at a place and I already know after my first bite that I will sorely miss that meal and the place. Nothing is ever as good as your first bite on your first visit. Sadly, since I am no longer residing in New York (why couldn't I have visited this place earlier? Actually, I know why. It's because it's in BROOKLYN. That's another story for another time), I have to resort to literally dreaming about this place until the next time I happen to be in New York.
Future steakhouse visits will be compared to the first bite I took at Peter Luger's, and I'm fairly confident that Peter Luger will always overshadow them. And let me say for argument sake, I had a bite of the New York first and not the filet (they serve the Porterhouse). The steak was so flavorful and so perfectly aged, that it did not need any seasoning whatsoever (not that they offer it to you) and the use of their famous steak sauce would actually ruin the meat itself. In fact I'm not really sure why their steak sauce is so "famous" since the steak stands perfectly on its own... and the steak sauce tastes more like cocktail sauce than anything.
It's so very important to have good marination, seasoning or otherwise flavoring in your steak. In my experience, many, many steakhouses either don't realize this or just aren't very good at it. The quality of the meat is important, but it cannot stand on it's own. That was the problem at LB Steak. The filet was tender and soft, but completely bland! Furthermore, the use of seasonings, sauces, etc are not essential to the end result of the meal (although important and helpful when preparing in your own home). At Peter Luger I was very happy and impressed to find the steak wasn't covered in sauce and not a speck of salt or pepper - just perfectly aged.
All in all, Peter Luger (which only takes cash and the Peter Luger credit card btw) was FANTASTIC and highly recommended to anyone who ever visits New York. It's only one stop into Brooklyn on the J train so there's really no excuse not to go. Expect to spend around $125 for two, but don't worry - it's so worth it.
