Finally tried LB Steak last night at Santana Row and happy to report that I was not disappointed!
I had hesitations about this place because the owner of LB Steak and Left Bank are one in the same. I won't go into my Left Bank experience but I was sorely disappointed, especially for the money you pay at that place. But since Jon and I were already at Santana Row and wanted some steak, we decided we'd give it a shot.
We walked right in with no reservation and no wait, win. I was also wearing Rainbows, another win. I ordered the 8oz filet medium rare; Jon ordered the 20oz Porterhouse medium. The steaks themselves were pretty good, but slightly bland. I wish they had marinated or at least spiced them up a bit. The quality of the meat was good too, comparable to Alexander's in how soft and tender my filet was. They were also cooked perfectly. My medium rare turned out quite rare, but not bloody so I liked it. And the service was quick! When I mentioned this to our server she said she pushed the entrees because we had not ordered a starter, another win.
I didn't like my bernaise sauce though. It was incredibly bland and gooey, too thick - like it had been sitting there for hours. It was cold too, so it's definitely possible it was in fact sitting there for hours. Definitely not worth the calories! Jon's green peppercorn sauce wasn't much better either. Better stick with the red wine sauce?
I did LOVE their truffled mac n' cheese. Big surprise right? But it was much better than Arcadia's, which I liked then. The truffle taste was poignant and stood on its own without the additions of mushrooms, and the amount of cheese was perfect. Not too cheesy and not to dry. The flavors was good, the spices just right. And at $4 a pop, I could go there again just to order 4 of them :)
I can't say it LB Steak beats Alexander's, but it was slightly cheaper and no complaints about the service. Check this place out next time your wandering for food on the Row.
