Dia de Pesca -- San Jose

To call this place a hole in the wall would even be an overstatement, but damn do they serve good fish tacos.

Food: Taqueria
Location: 55 N Bascom Avenue, San Jose; down the street from Valley Fair
Price: $3.25 per "si food" taco

It's a mix of a parking lot, taco truck and store front. Go inside the actual building to order, go outside to their "patio"/PARKING LOT to sit, and wait to be served food that is made in a taco truck. I guess it's the best of both worlds?

I actually found this place while idly flipping through a Wave magazine, raving about their fish tacos. I've never been a fan of fish tacos myself but the photo in the magazine was mouth-watering. Thus we had to give it a try. We were hesitant at first, seeing their amateur website and incomprehensible-yet-extremely-long menu, but what the hell. Long story short, I can't wait to go back!

They look beautiful, don't they? They serve Tilapia, Salmon, Halibut and Tuna fishes. You have the option of either grilled or battered. We tried the Halibut and the Tuna, and the Halibut won. Battered and fried was also the way to go. I liked how they sliced the fish in thin strips - like fish stick s- instead of big chunks of it that easily fall out of your taco. The fish taste was still there but there's a better batter-to-fish ratio. Good tortilla, good lettuce mixture on top - which is important! I only wish their chipotle mayo had a little bit more of a kick to it, but the habanero hot sauce saved the day.

They also serve scallop, crab and octopus tacos. I tried the scallop but better stick to the fish. Garland also tried their carne asada taco as well as a burrito, but seems like the fish tacos were a mutual winner.

I also liked their Chicken Quisadilla. Seemed kind of silly to get one of these here since they're so easy to make but the chicken in this one really surprised me. They pulled the chicken apart, like pulled-pork style, which made it incredibly flavorful. Also served with salsa, sour cream AND guac, so a win here too.

Next time you're craving fish tacos, skip Rubios/Wahoos and try this place. Bring me with you too! :D
